How to Perform an Annual Website Audit

When was the last time you looked through your church’s website? 2022 is right around the corner, and with all this goal-setting energy in the air, it’s a great time to review your church’s website. Auditing your site on an annual basis will help ensure that you’re making the most of your digital marketing efforts. Here are some of our top tips for performing an annual website review.

Make Sure People Can Easily Contact You

Are your website’s contact forms working properly? Is your phone number or address up to date? Contact errors can easily slip through the cracks, especially if your church has undergone some recent changes. Scroll through every page of your site to look for contact information, and test out each form to make sure it is set up. While you’re at it, check the contact info on your social media accounts and business listing, too!

Perform a Speed Test

They say time is money, but in this case—time is traffic for your site! Studies show that if your site does not load in three seconds, 53% of potential visitors will leave. Online tools such as Pingdom or Google’s Page Speed Insights make it easy to test your site’s load time.

Ensure Your Site is Responsive Across Multiple Devices

Speaking of mobile users, is your site easily accessible on mobile phones and tablets? An estimated 294 million Americans owned a smartphone in 2020, and that number is expected to reach 311 million by 2025. If your site isn’t easy to navigate on a mobile device, they’ll go find someone else.

Pull your church’s site up on a variety of devices, including a desktop computer, laptop, tablet, and smartphone (you may need to ask your staff or volunteers for assistance). Scroll through each page, and make sure the buttons are clickable and the text is easy to read.

Update Your Billing Information and Security Certificates

Make sure your billing and contact information is up to date with both your hosting environment and your domain registrar to avoid any unexpected downtime. Update any plugins on your site, including your security certification. Google will “punish” sites that are not properly secured, so check to make sure you have SSL certificates installed.

Review Your Google Analytics and Google Search Console

Google Analytics can provide you with valuable insights about your site, including how many people visit your site, what pages they’re looking at, and how long they browse for. Look for any trends, such as a spike in traffic after an event. In addition to Analytics, Google also provides their Search Console service, which will help show you how your website is doing in search results.
